Also known as books I want to read this year that have not yet been published! For the sake of not doing another Bookish Tuesday post with no links to reviews, I’m also adding books I’ve already read that come out this year (some were on my favorites of 2022 as well).
The End of Drum-Time by Hanna Pylväinen

Pub Date: January 24, 2023
I love the premise of this book – it feels very similar to The Mercies, another book that I really like the idea of but have yet to read. Set north of the Arctic Circle in the 1850s, it follows a group of native reindeer herders as the community becomes more Westernized as more people convert to Christianity. I blurb read this one, but want to read it with my book club so didn’t read the whole thing yet.
The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten

Pub Date: March 7, 2023
I just finished this on Saturday and I’m really looking forward to the series. It’s a dark fantasy with necromancers, but alas very little spice for being billed as fantasy romance. I feel like at this point, if you’re not meeting SJM and Jennifer Armentrout on the spice train, you need to up it, so we’ll see where Hannah goes in the series from here. After all, the first Crescent City book was spice-free so we’ll see.
Weyward by Emilia Hart

Pub Date: March 7, 2023
I read Weyward back in manuscript stage last spring and I’m so excited for this one to finally be out so that I can share it with everyone. It follows three generations of women over time (present, WWII, and 1700s) as they contend with the men around them, and their witchy heritage. This is not a witch book per se, more historical fiction focused with an accounting of accused witchcraft.
This Bird Has Flown by Susanna Hoffs

Pub Date: April 4, 2023
I have just started this one and cannot wait to see where it goes. For those who don’t know, Susanna is the lead singer of The Bangles (one of my favorite bands) and this is her debut novel. Bonus points that the protagonist is the exact same age as me, so yay! A contemporary romance in name, it feels very witty so far. Each chapter is song based and you can find Susanna’s full playlist on Spotify HERE.
The Cleaving by Juliet E. McKenna

Pub Date: April 11, 2023
Feminist King Arthur retelling, yes please! I have a digital ARC for this one that hopefully I’ll be able to get to soon, or I’ll save it for a future book club selection, but either way, I’m very excited for it!
The Secret Society of Tea and Treason by India Holton

Pub Date: April 18, 2023
I have been absolutely loving this series (reviews of the first two will be coming soon, I promise) – Victorian romance with witches and pirates and secret societies, what could be better? This is the third, and with most romance series, the characters carry over but each book is focused on its own couple.
No Two Persons by Erica Bauermeister

Pub Date: May 2, 2023
This was my favorite book that I read last year and another one that I read a good year-pre publication in manuscript phase. It’s a collection of short stories all tied together – each chapter focuses on a different character and goes into how the same book effected each of their lives. It’s beautifully written and will probably top quite a few Best of 2023 lists this year.
Undaunted by Brooke Kroeger

Pub Date: May 16, 2023
I love a good book about female journalists and this is just the first of many that will be hitting shelves this year.
The Summer Skies by Jenny Colgan

Pub Date: July 11, 2023
I do love my Jenny Colgan books and this is, I believe, her first about a female pilot, another random subgenre of things that I absolutely adore. I cannot wait to read it and am it sure it will be just as good as the rest of her books.
First to the Front by Lorissa Rinehart

Pub Date: July 11, 2023
How I had never heard of Dickey Chapelle before finding out about this book blows my mind. I had no idea who she was, but I expect this book to be very similar to In Extremis in all the best ways.
Mrs. Porter Calling by A. J. Pearce

Pub Date: August 8, 2023
Another series continuation, here we have the third book in the Emmy Lake Chronicles! I’ve been loving Emmy’s stories so far and I cannot wait to see how things progress for her in this installment! It’s a WWII series set in London at a women’s newspaper and is, for being a WWII series, mostly tear-free.
The Gentleman’s Gambit by Evie Dunmore

Pub Date: September 19, 2023
This book has been pushed back a full year so I’m hesitant to include it because who knows if it will happen again. Currently expected in September, it follows the fourth member of the League of Extraordinary Women, Catriona Campbell. (This is just a placeholder cover, the actual cover hasn’t been released yet).
The Lost Queen #3 by Signe Pike
Pub Date: Fall 2023
We have no cover or date, but Signe’s website says this book is coming this year. She also said as much in the fall of 2020 when I did an event with her (virtually) for The Forgotten Kingdom but a lot can change in three years. Fingers crossed that it’s actually coming this year!
