Books That Scared Me

I’m not a huge scary/horror book reader, but there are a few books that have given me pause and nightmares in my sleep. From actual horror to real life horror, here are just a few that came to mind for this Halloween week.

We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix

One of the few actual horror books that I’ve read, We Sold Our Souls was both scary and a quick read. Not my favorite, but definitely filled it’s roll as scary!

The Vorrh by Brian Catling

I have never been so terrified by a book as I was when reading The Vorrh. I call it a dark and twisty Heart of Darkness. I’ve found it’s a book a person either loves or hates and there’s not really an in between.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik

The fact that the forest is a whole other character in this book scarred me senseless because I definitely wasn’t expecting it. In addition, when one of the characters transforms into something clearly not human, I had nightmares for days.

My Holiday in North Korea by Wendy E. Simmons

The real life experiences of Wendy terrified me. I’ve never wanted to go to North Korea, and well, now I really don’t want to go to North Korea.

Moriarty by Anthony Horowitz

Anthony Horowitz is one of my favorite mystery writers and while I’ve only read one book by him, I’ve only read about 5 mysteries and the rest are by Agatha Christie. So while it doesn’t say much, he really does write a great mystery full of suspense that is, most definitely, scary.
